Environment Friendly Traveling: Car vs. Airplane
Using mechanical transportations for traveling obviously damages the environment with the types of exhaust that it produces. Unfortunately in our business and economic world, to survive we do rely on engines run on gasoline or electricity. Either way the environment is still impacted by the pollution, whether straight from your tail pipe or the power plants that create emissions before the electricity comes to your home and into your car. Since traveling is required for so many jobs, the real question is what mode of transportation is best for the environment.
The most common forms of mechanical transportation are cars and airplanes. Both of these mechanisms provide the average worker to arrive at their working destination. Many prefer the luxury of the car as it is faster and more reliable than public transportation. Others rely on airplanes to fly across the country when time of arrival matters. Yet, when it comes to driving across the country or flying for the family vacation, which is better for the environment.
According to a recent study done by Professor Michael Sivak at the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute argues that in fact flying from place to place within the United States consumes less energy than driving a car. Sivak has studied data over the past 40 years passenger movements. He has calculated the amounts of British Thermal Unit (BTUs) of a mile in a car verse an airplane.
When it was first started int he 1970’s the obvious choice for less damaging environmental effects was driving a car, but since about the year 2000, flying has become increasingly more environmentally friendly. This data also seems flip flop with the advent of the electric cars, but in the face of that discovery flying is still better for the environment than driving.
The reasons for this shocking twist comes from the cultural desire to drive solo, dynamics of airline markets, and nothing in connection with regulations for cars or airplanes. As the older generation of airplanes retire, more fuel efficient airplanes are being purchased. Drag-resistance paint and winglets are just a few of the innovated engineering technology that have made airplanes much more efficient than cars.
Although Sivak’s findings have yet to be published by a scientific journal, his mathematical equations have put airplanes as more environmental friendly per mile than a car.
